Phuket's
only zoo is fairly small but still provides an enjoyable
day out, especially for families with younger children.
It has the feel of a home zoo, which is how it began.
The zoo covers an area of 10 hectares and is a fun place
to see a large collection of animal and reptiles. There
are more than 600 species of birds, 100 species of
reptiles and amphibians, and 45 species of mammals.
The zoo is famous for its daily animal shows which
feature performances by elephants, crocodiles, birds and
monkeys. The zoo also features a nocturnal house
containing hard-to-find creatures of the night, an
aquarium, an orchid garden, and a butterfly garden.
Animal Shows
One of the highlights of visiting Phuket Zoo is seeing
the animal shows. For more information see animal shows.
Aquarium
The aquarium at Phuket Zoo is small but interesting and
the air-conditioning provides welcome relief from the
heat of the rest of the zoo. The entrance is a giant
crocodile's mouth. You have to walk down the crocodiles
throat to get in. On display is a large variety of both
fresh and salt-water species from around the world.
Upstairs there are displays of smaller aquarium fishes,
turtles, frogs, crabs, lizards, giant snakes, nocturnal
birds and animals. There is also a display of seashells
and fishing equipment, showing local and imported fish
catching techniques.
Getting There:
The zoo is located about 1km down Soi Phalai off Chao Fa
Road (East), half-way between Phuket City and Chalong,
and about 25kms from Patong. There is a large billboard
advertising the zoo at the intersection, which is quite
easy to spot.
